Earlier this year I waxed lyrically about Mr. Bonamassa's landmark live shows and yet again another milestone was achieved with this show at the famous Radio City Music Hall that has hosted practically every singer and musician of any note since the 1930’s. The approach to the double date shows that took place in January 2015 was to play to a smaller number than Joe probably would normally in the 5000-plus seat venue, but create a show of two distinct halves, as the first half is purely acoustic and the electric second set was completed by brass section. The DVD show has a different order for the tracks than the CD accompaniment, but it’s the visual experience that leaves you awestruck at the depth and scope that Bonamassa and his contingent has gained; he is unarguably responsible for taking blues from club gig to arena status.
Starting with tourist style shots of New York and intro credits done like an old movie, the set kicks off with ‘Dustbowl’ with the band all sat down and looking relaxed. The emphasis on all the musicians is excellent, with each afforded a platform to showcase their ability, none more so than percussionist Lenny Castro whose delicacies are integral to the show. Chat is minimal, Joe preferring to link all the songs effortlessly until eventually he states “good night” and says that the show is a continuation of the tour dubbed Joe Bonamassa And The Huckelberries. Faultless and mesmerizing, the musicians are treated with respect during their soundbite solo performances and especially the very soft moments, which are tenderly done. As the acoustic part ends, the lone spotlight figure of Mats Wester playing a nyckelharpa suddenly erupts with a burst of light to reveal the electric side of the concert complete with the brass section in white suits. As vibrant and energetic as anything I’ve seen by Joe, it’s a magnificent music hall approach to this evident with all the flamboyance and nuances required for such a feat.
As always, bonus material is included and adds another dimension to what we know about Joe. This time a behind the scenes look is taken and most importantly a glance into Joe’s upbringing, culminating in a brilliant present by his parents to Joe in commemoration of the shows. It is wonderful to watch such a personal moment in Joe’s life. Ever surpassing the confines of imagination, Joe Bonamassa and his producer, Kevin Shirley, have come up with an essential purchase yet again.
