Blues rock guitarist-vocalist Joe Bonamassa finally made it to The Greek Theatre on Saturday, August 29, for the final show of his 2015 world tour. Bonamassa told the crowd that 16-years ago he lived not far from The Greek Theatre, on Los Feliz and Vermont Blvds., where he used to watch the tour trucks make their way up the hill to the Theatre. He said, “I was so close, but so far.” The audience cheered when he announced that his dream, that night, was finally fulfilled.
Joe Bonamassa was a child prodigy of sorts, learning the guitar at a very young age, and opening for the late B.B. King when he was only 12-years old. Since that time Bonamassa has put out over 15 solo albums, played alongside Stephen Stills, Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, and Steve Winwood to name a few, performed at the Royal Albert Hall and was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2013. He has garnered a loyal following of blues and rock fans through social media and grass roots marketing.
Saturday’s concert was not only the last show of his tour but it was also being filmed for a live DVD, making for a high energy performance and reaction from the audience. The stage lighting and design was breathtakingly beautiful with just the right amount of smoke billowing through the light rays. It made for a striking backdrop to an incredible show. Bonamassa changed guitars with almost every song playing Gibson classics like the Gold Top Les Paul.
The Three Kings Band, an array of stellar musicians supporting Bonamassa that night included Late Show with David Letterman alumni drummer Anton Fig, Stevie Ray Vaughn & Double Trouble keyboardist Reese Wynans, and guitarist Kirk Fletcher. Additional members of the band on bass Michael Rhodes, trumpet Lee Thornburg, saxophone Paulie Cerra, saxophone Ron Dzuibla, and background vocals Mahalia Barnes, Jade MacRae and Juanita Tippins.
Highlights of the concert included a Freddie King cover “Goin’ Down” and the Albert King classic “Oh, Pretty Woman.” Bonamassa who started his career opening for B.B.
