Time Clocks Live – Joe Bonamassa at Red Rocks, August 8, 2022

"He can do things with a guitar that mere mortals can’t fathom."

One thing you can never say about Bonamassa is that he rests on his laurels.  On every new album, and with every new “side” project, Bonamassa pushes himself into new territory.  Last night’s show at Red Rocks was yet another example of his willingness to move out of his comfort zone.  Still, even with the supercharged production, the appeal of Joe Bonamassa comes down to one thing.  He can do things with a guitar that mere mortals can’t fathom.  I was sitting next to a man named Stu, who is a longtime Bonamassa fan but who was seeing him live for the first time.  He commented that he’d seen a lot of guitar players in his time, but never anything like this.  I think that sums it up pretty darned well.

Joe Bonamassa in Concert - Arizona Financial Theatre - Phoenix, Arizona

"There's no question that this guy can physically step on the gas and like a supercar go zero to 100 in sub 3 seconds."

In Phoenix 2022, Joe brought at least 6 guitars on stage, changing every 3 or 4 songs, availing himself to different tones and as a guitar player, each guitar talks to you differently. He opened with a contemporary blues set and on a gold top Les Paul. If you haven’t seen Joe in years, he is now highly polished with his hair trimmed professionally but not square. He has a custom made blue suit with sequin trim, not unlike a tamed down Manuel or Nudie suite with notes for theme, and of course there’s the glasses. He doesn’t play to all of the theatrics of a guitar icon and sticks to his craft, and that’s something that I appreciate about a mature performer.

A Look At Joe Bonamassa’s Summer 2022 Tour With Kenny Wayne Shepherd & Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening

"Without question, Bonamassa manages to simultaneously be a relatable performer and a modern-day guitar great."

Per the show seen tonight at Jones Beach? Joe Bonamassa not only delivered the hits one would expect, but also the full aforementioned Time Clocks album. Kenny Wayne Shepherd also performed a hits-filled set before closing with Jimi Hendrix classic “Voodoo Child (Slight Return).” First of three, Jason Bonham and band, delivered a set which mixed Led Zeppelin hits and favored deep cuts. Altogether, fans experienced a show rooted in both top-notch blues-rock and guitar virtuosity. Without question, Bonamassa manages to simultaneously be a relatable performer and a modern-day guitar great.
