Some people take a “birthday week.” Others claim a “birthday month.” Buddy Guy gets a whole birthday tour, and deservedly so.

The recently minted 90-year-old has lore dating back to studio sessions with Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and Sonny Boy Williamson, and a list of disciples (e.g. Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, Jeff Beck, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Gary Clark Jr., John Mayer) who’ve spent more than six decades naming him as an indelible influence.

But the Buddy Guy 90 Tour isn’t a fond farewell or a traveling museum piece. As he showed at the Hollywood Bowl on the second Wednesday in September, it’s a celebration of the blues, built around a man who—after more than 70 years in music—still shreds his guitar, howls on vocals, and brings plenty of stories and spirit in between.
