"Riding with the Kings"

Originally written & recorded by John Hiatt as
"Riding with the King"

“Riding with the King” was originally written by singer-songwriter John Hiatt and appeared on his sixth studio album, Riding with the King, which was released on Geffen Records in 1983. The song was inspired by a strange dream had by the album’s producer, Scott Matthews.

Years later, Hiatt helped to re-work the lyrics to the song for a cover version by blues heroes Eric Clapton and B.B. King that was released on their collaborative album Riding with the King in 2000. The King / Clapton album rocketed all the way to #1 on the Billboard Top Blues Albums chart, and went 2x Platinum. It went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album in 2001.

Joe Bonamassa’s recording of the song takes its cues from Hiatt, King, and Clapton – all of whom Joe has known and admires tremendously. Performed at a tempo that is slightly quicker, it includes beefy horn lines from Lee Thornburg on trumpet and Ron Dziubla on saxophone as well as captivating supporting vocals from Mahalia Barnes.
