Growing up in the 70’s, you were privy to a lot of great music. There wasn’t all the technology, apps, games and musical formats that are around today. For entertainment, people attended concerts, watched a lot of television, listened to 8-tracks while driving around trying to be cool, or they would hang out at the local haunts with their friends, playing music and doing all kinds of devious things that would horrify their parents if they knew. Back then, radio stations played great bands that were just starting out and getting airplay. Today these bands are still pounding the pavement. One such artist is Bob Seger. He still has a story to tell with a new album and a final tour…
This Detroit native started out fronting a three-piece band called the Decibels in 1961. On the weekends, you could always find them playing at the local haunts around Michigan in the early 70’s. By the time he started the Silver Bullet Band in 1974, he was already a star and he and the band were making hits as late as 1987. This was one band that was constantly touring, filing all types of venues. They would pack the house wherever they went. Whether it was watching Alto Reed standing on top of a stack of Marshall speaker cabinets performing his solo for the song “Turn the Page” or “Old Time Rock N Roll” or seeing the lights dim down while Seger set the mood for the next hit song he was singing. It was worth it to see them live. You left the show knowing you got everything you paid for. This was because Bob Seger is a great songwriter and storyteller! His lyrics reflect scenarios that everyone can relate to. He wrote anthems about everyday life, something we all could connect to and embrace and later reminisce about.
Well, after a career that spanned more than 50 years, Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band will hit the road for one last time on their final tour “Travelin’ Man Tour”. Bob Seger announced the final tour just recently stating that more dates will be added in the coming weeks, including dates in Las Vegas, Fresno, San Diego, Vancouver, Florida and more. This will be their very last tour, the final act ending on a high note.
He also has a new album coming out on November 17th called I Knew You When, which features a mixed bag of tasty tidbits. On this album, he covers Lou Reed’s “Busload of Faith” with full musical arrangements added to it as well as a song called “Democracy” by Leonard Cohen. But this isn’t a “covers album”, it has several new tracks, a few songs from leftover projects that were never released, and a great track called “Glenn’s song” which is a tribute to the late Glenn Frey. This also explains the cover art which is when he and Glenn became friends. Overall, this album is comparable to Seger’s “Face the Promise” album, and it’s worth checking out.
