One of the top phenomenal stadium rock bands to come out of England, the band Queen is still entertaining the masses to this day. Forming in 1971, the band released their first album, Queen, in 1973. In 1974, Queen II was released with a UK headlining tour and later in November of 1974, they made their first US tour and released Sheer Heart Attack which became a hit on both sides of the Atlantic. This just proves the tenacity that this band has and that they’re a force to be reckoned with still to this day.
In 1975, magic happened. Their new release, A Night At The Opera, and more specifically the song Bohemian Rhapsody became one of the greatest singles of all time! Whether you hear it at karaoke bars, at home singing it in the shower or having flashbacks of the song in Wayne’s World, this song has a presence that commands attention. This also gave Queen their first platinum album.
In 1980, magic happened again. The Game, their eighth studio album was in terms a change in their musical style. The band was trying different things, including a synthesizer for the first time, this rubbed some of their fans the wrong way and yet gained them different audiences at the same time. Well, it was the late 70’s and the music was changing with the emergence of Disco, Funk and other musical avenues.
Fortunately, luck was on their side again and the single, Another One Bites The Dust, becomes a huge international hit that came from nowhere and threw them in the spotlight once again! By the end of the year Queen sold over 45,000,000 albums worldwide. In 1985, they were asked to perform at Live Aid from Wembley Stadium, in which they stole the show with a jaw dropping performance, which to this day is still being touted as “One of the greatest live performances in the history of rock.”
In November of 1991, Freddie Mercury, the flamboyant front man of the band, succumbed to his battle with aids. Since his passing, the band has set up various projects to honor Freddie Mercury. The band also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, joining The Beatles as the only one of a handful of non-US bands to receive this honor. In 2004 they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
As one of their own song states, “The Show Must Go On,” The band has continued to tour with artist Paul Rodgers and just recently Adam Lambert taking the helm as front man with tours currently going on in the U.S.
Lastly, there is a Queen 18 LP vinyl box set coming out in September (25th), and a new movie coming out about the band Queen called Bohemian Rhapsody chronicling the years leading up to their legendary appearance at the Live Aid concert in 1985.
