With the untimely death of Prince, many of his fans were waiting patiently to see what the Prince Estate would do with all his musical assets. Due to the fact the he didn’t leave a will, it was one interesting conundrum to take on as well as an over the top dog and pony show for the press to blast all over the airwaves. His estate was the perfect circus setting, there were family members coming forward, lawyers, labels etc. all vying for a piece of the action.
Well, finally! There is something for the fans to get excited over! On what would have been his 60th birthday, the estate announced recently that it is prepping a new album of previously unreleased home recordings, Piano and a Microphone 1983, set to arrive September 21st. The nine tracks are culled from demo cassette recordings Prince made at his piano in his home studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota. The first teaser track being released is Prince's rendition of the 19th century spiritual, "Mary Don't You Weep," which is currently streaming.
This is the first of many new projects celebrating his musical legacy coming down the road. The Prince Estate also signed an exclusive distribution agreement with Sony Music which covers his career from 1995-2010. This deal will include the rights to previously released singles, B-sides, remixes, non-album tracks, live recordings and music videos recorded before 1995. I think we all can agree that there will be some Prince Box sets coming in the next couple years.
Even if you missed your chance to see the Purple one live, you can still at least experience his music via the "4U: A Symphonic Celebration of Prince." Which will feature live band, Wolf Trap Orchestra performing new arrangements of classic tunes curated by Roots drummer Questlove. It launches September 6th and includes a variety of stops where it will wrap up on October 21st in Kansas City. Tickets are available via the 4U Prince website.
Whether you’re a fan or not, Prince was a true force of nature as a performer, a multi-instrumentalist, musical genius and philanthropist. A person who launched a lot of careers for musicians, artists and other creative types and was always focused on being in the forefront of what was happening in the now. Which was bringing inspiration to the masses in his own sweet way.
