The Beatles “Yellow Submarine” is coming back to the big screen!
Out of all the Beatles movies that are still available, “Yellow Submarine” is deemed the favorite among most Beatle fans because of the surreal sometimes hallucinogenic and psychedelic animation factor. The Beatles music in the background helps as well!
The film uses a style of limited animation which includes optical illusions, driven patterns and bright abstract coloring throughout to create depth and movement. This kind of art style became popular back in the 60’s and paved the way for Terry Gilliam's animations for Do Not Adjust Your Set and Monty Python's Flying Circus as well as the Schoolhouse Rock vignettes for ABC and early seasons of Sesame Street and The Electric Company.
In celebration of its 50th anniversary, a newly restored 4K version of the animated Beatles film “Yellow Submarine” will be hitting the big screen in select theaters in the U.S. And for the fans, it’s the best-looking version of the film they’ll ever see. Fans can expect the images being brighter and visually more stimulating than ever. Other changes that theater viewers will notice is that some of the scenes that was shortened for the DVD and Blu-ray release in 2012 have been fully restored to include everything from the original version, corrected sequences that had been changed for the U.S. Market, have also been restored. The sound quality is pristine (5.1 surround sound for extra effects) and lastly is inserting the “Hey Bulldog” sequence that was not seen in the film originally shown in the U.S.
Why should you see it? Mostly for the artistic “wow” factor! It’s also a family film that will appeal to children with just enough snarky wit about it to keep the adults entertained. What a great way for Beatle fans to introduce the Beatles to their kids, grandchildren and younger generations. Lastly, because it’s the Beatles! A half-century after "Yellow Submarine" debuted, still to this day, it’s considered an artistic masterpiece that to some movie critics still supersedes animated films coming out today. It’s that kind of iconic cinematic achievement!
