Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody wins four Oscar’s

When it comes to award shows, you just don’t know what you’re going to get! But, this year’s 2019 Oscar’s brought about some exciting moments and changes that made it worth watching. It also proved to be a very positive situation for music!

Such is the case for the band Queen and the movie “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Who triumphed at the Academy Awards by bringing home 4 Oscars! They also reported on their web-site that they won more Oscars than The Godfather! And yes, they did. The movie scooped up the awards in the following categories:

Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role:
Rami Malek in Bohemian Rhapsody

Achievement in Film Editing: Bohemian Rhapsody:
John Ottman

Achievement in Sound Editing: Bohemian Rhapsody:
John Warhurst and Nina Hartstone.

Achievement in Sound Mixing: Bohemian Rhapsody:
Paul Massey, Tim Cavagin and John Casali

The Oscar’s opened up the show with the remaining members of Queen joined by Adam Lambert doing a mix of Queen’s hits “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions.” The crowd was singing along and gave the band a standing ovation to boot! They ended the performance with a nod to Freddie Mercury by having his image on the backdrop. It was as if he was there as well. The show must go on...

Rami Malek's Oscars Speech Was a Heartfelt Tribute to Being "Unapologetically" True! After sweeping through award season on a wave of acclaim, Rami Malek is now officially an Oscar winner! The Bohemian Rhapsody star took home the Oscar on Sunday night for best actor in a leading role, and his acceptance speech touched on the people important to him as much as the incredible true-life inspirations behind the movie. "My mom is somewhere here . . . I love you, lady! My family, thank you for all of this.

You know, my dad didn't get to see me do any of this, but I think he's looking down on this right now," he began, also paying tribute to his Egyptian heritage and his status as a first-generation American. "I may not have been the obvious choice, but I guess it worked out," he joked. He also thanked the band Queen, who were sitting in the audience nearby after performing earlier on the broadcast, for welcoming him into their "phenomenal, extraordinary legacy," and he called his cast his "equals [and] betters," singling out costar and girlfriend Lucy Boynton as "the heart of this film . . . [and] you have captured my heart."

Later, Malek talked about his younger self and how extraordinary all this seems. "That kid, he was struggling with his identity, trying to figure himself out. And I think, to anyone struggling with theirs and trying to discover their voice, listen, we made a film about a gay man, an immigrant, who lived his life just unapologetically himself, and the fact that I'm celebrating him and this story with you tonight is proof that we're longing for stories like this." - Pop Sugar

Lady Gaga Wins Best Original Song....

Lady Gaga has had a huge year and now she has the Oscar to prove it! She won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Now that she has won her first Academy Award, what’s next for this pop Superstar? While this was Gaga's first feature film, this isn't her first rodeo/go at acting/a major award win. In 2016, she won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television for American Horror Story: Hotel. She’s probably going to tour or take some time off. But you can guarantee that her music sales will be going up along with the sales after the movie is released on all formats. She was definitely the bell of the ball! But what ended the night was when she performed with Bradley Cooper on the song ‘Shallow.’ Rolling Stone Magazine described it the best!

"Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper - That Insanely Hot ‘Shallow’ Performance People throw around the phrase “our next performers need no introduction,” but at the Oscars it proved to be true. Oscars producers knew there was so much anticipation for Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s duet of “Shallow,” their monster ballad (and eventual Best Song winner) from A Star Is Born, they cut right to the chase. Crew members were hustling to set up a piano and stool as the song’s first notes were strummed from the orchestra pit. "" – Rolling Stone

Then Gaga and Coops casually walked to the stage from their front-row seats and proceeded to blow everyone away with a performance dripping in chemistry and emotional intensity. They sang the final lines seated on Gaga’s piano bench with their foreheads touching, as if they were alone at home … not, say, in front of hundreds of Hollywood’s biggest stars and millions of viewers around the world. How they were not ferociously making out at the end of it is a mystery to us all. MF – Rolling Stone

How does winning a Grammy or Oscar Work Out For the Artists?

Sometimes, just a simple lyric can capture the whole essence of what a feature length motion picture is trying to convey. Of course, Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Actor are typically the most celebrated awards at the Oscars. However, we can’t overlook that there have been some absolutely incredible songs written specifically for the silver screen.

The Best Original Song category was added to the Academy Awards in 1934. It’s important to note that the award is given to the songwriter(s) who compose the original song that is written explicitly for a movie. Some of the biggest names in music history have penned Oscar-winning songs.

Adele has never appeared in a movie, but she has more Oscars than Alfred Hitchcock, after she nabbed the award in 2013 for "Skyfall." Eminem won an Oscar for "Lose Yourself" in 2003, a song that completely captured the themes and tone of his semi-autobiographical film debut 8 Mile. Elton John, and Bruce Springsteen have all written songs that won Oscars. – Ranker

Sure, winning an Oscar can improve an artist’s sales but it usually makes them a “go to” performer for future collaborations on movie soundtracks. By performing the song, they are nominated for and their name on the project, it will usually drive sales towards the movie itself and possibly the soundtrack so the artist will receive royalties from the sales.

Here is list of some of the more popular Oscar winning songs that have won:

“Evergreen” (Love Theme from A Star Is Born) – Barbara Streisand & Paul Williams

“I Just Called To Say I Love You” - Movie: The Woman in Red– Stevie Wonder

“Theme From Shaft” - Movie: Shaft - Isaac Hayes

“Things Have Changed” - Movie: Wonder Boys – Bob Dylan

“I Need to Wake Up” - Movie: An Inconvenient Truth - Melissa Etheridge

“The Weary Kind” - Movie: Crazy Heart - Ryan Bingham and T Bone Burnett

“It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp” – Movie: Hustle & Flow - Juicy J, Frayser Boy, and DJ Paul

As for the Grammy Awards, the live event is far from a loss. Forbes reports that performers and producers see a “‘Grammy Bounce’ of at least 55% in concert ticket sales and producer fees during the year following a Grammy win.”

Thanks to the high-profile night, stars benefit in mainstream visibility and in their pockets too. After winning his first Grammy, “Bruno Mars’ average nightly gross swelled from $130,000 to $202,000 (+55%).” Esperanza Spalding went from $20,000 to $32,000 (+60%) and Taylor Swift jumped from $125,000 to $600,000 (+380%).

Lastly, the gift bags that the artists receive, are usually more than most people’s salaries. Items sometimes include jewelry, Gibson guitars, trips to deserted islands, cashmere sweaters, teeth whitening products, sunglasses and designer leather bags.” It varies each year. So, no, the consensus is that music’s superstars don’t walk away with a physical check in tow. The association to the Grammys, however, does fatten their wallets long after the special airs. The Grammy’s give artists the most bang for the buck when it comes to winning an award.
